Early Life
Arijit Singh was born into a musically rich family in Jiaganj, West Bengal. His father is Punjabi, while his mother was Bengali. Music was a natural part of his childhood.
His musical education began at a very young age:
- His maternal grandmother was a singer.
- His maternal aunt was trained in Indian classical music.
- His maternal uncle played the tabla.
- His mother encouraged him to learn music.

However, music remained his primary focus from childhood.
Reality Show Journey
In 2005, Arijit participated in the television singing competition Fame Gurukul.
Although he did not win the competition, his talent caught the attention of many music directors. This became the turning point of his career.
Later, he won another reality show, 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil, using the prize money to build a small recording studio and continue learning music production.
Bollywood Debut
Although some recordings happened earlier, his first widely recognized Bollywood playback song was:
- Phir Mohabbat – Murder 2 (2011)
The song showcased his emotional singing style and introduced him to Bollywood audiences.
Breakthrough
In 2013, Arijit sang:
“Tum Hi Ho”
from the movie Aashiqui 2.
The song became a nationwide sensation and transformed him into India’s leading playback singer almost overnight. It earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer.
